Nurture

At the collapsing threshold between data-generated dimensions and our own lived reality, a post-biological ecosystem begins to take shape.

In this data-generated ecosystem, the real-world evolutionary paradigm is substituted for a semi-automated, collaborative process: species thrive or die, based on the iterative whim of AI, filtered through the creative instinct or ‘curatorial eye’ of the artist.

About the Process

Like the ‘Primordial Soup’ from which all life is thought to have evolved over three billion years ago, Nurture begins with a ‘primordial’ dataset: the collection of visual and raw informational components from which the lifeforms inside this digital ecosystem arise.

These basic components are combined, through means both intentional and arbitrary, to create new digital lifeforms that evolve and mutate, triggering a pseudo-evolutionary process that begins to populate the ecosystem with ‘life’.

Overview

BEYOND
at Salame st. 35, Tel Aviv
15th July–31st December, 2024
Curated by Beyond

Exhibition Details

Exploring the ways in which the forces and entities of nature can be translated into parameters that define a digital environment or phenomenon, “Nurture” (2024) as exhibited at the Beyond exhibition, configured large scale, fragmented LED panels and physical mechanical set design, into a sort of mini biome populated by evolving surreal imagery. More than a single piece of work, Nurture in this context is a digital/physical simulation of a primitive ecosystem.

"Fresh Paint"
at LG AI Exhibition
3rd–8th July, 2024
Curated by Fresh Paint and LG Israel

Exhibition Details

“Nurture” (2024), as seen at the Fresh Paint exhibition in Tel Aviv, is presented in a more traditional, decontextualised format (when compared to the original installation exhibited at Beyond Tel Aviv.   By displaying the work on a cluster of separated LED screens, each displaying individual snippets of the original artwork, an immersive ecosystem is portioned and exhibited for detached viewing, to be consumed in a similar manner to educational dioramas of extinct (or extant) organisms and their habitat’s that are often displayed inside museums, intended as more of a learning resource than an immersive experience.   Placing the work in this context creates a simplified observer paradigm for the viewer, introducing a sense of history to the original artwork.
Using ComfyUI to produce an array of environments via repeated tweaking of a set of pre-determined ‘ecological’ parameters, we built a system that, through simple. small-scale adjustments, could deliver vastly different outputs.

Such a system has the scope to evolve into something more sophisticated, capable of self-perpetuation with minimal external input or creative direction.
