Rugosas
Inspired by the large coral systems found in prehistoric oceans, Rugosas (2024) is an exploration of biodiversity in the latent stages of new ecosystems. In a process that could be described as informed-reflexive drawing, Yam responds to the creatures and environments archived in his mind as a result of visual research, improvising new forms in VR to create colonies of digital rugosa to simulate chance and other factors that drive the evolution of natural systems.

About the Process
After modelling a variety of rugosas using an automatic 3D drawing process in Gravity VR, interesting and successful forms are selected for further refinement, before they are transferred into Cinema 4D for texturing.
Simple environments are created to house these rugosa colonies, and the composition and its components undergo further compositional and visual adjustments to create a harmonious underwater ecosystem.
