Vi 3D Identity Explorations
We were approached by Vi to help them build a 3D identity that distills their complex product suite into a concise, diagrammatic branding rollout, including a full platform explainer film and related graphic elements for their website revamp.
The Research and development process for this production was extensive, yielding a variety of conceptual approaches and visual motifs that were eventually set aside in favour of a simplified and direct identity system that prioritises clarity and explainability.
Below is a selection of different explorations developed during during the R&D phase.

_Data as Fibre
Our concept for the film centered on the idea of thread as a physical representation of data. Based on this notion, we developed a system through which streams of data (threads) could be combined and organised in vast quantities through a weaving process. Taking an incomprehensibly massive quantity of data and combining and organising it through a process of weaving to create a tactile data stream that is simultaneously vast, yet legible.
Below are our explorations of this idea of “data as thread”, which became the conceptual and visual backbone of the project.

_Designing an MAB
With the power of multi-armed bandit machine learning as the foundation of a specific Vi product offering, we needed to translate this complex framework into a physical machine that sat comfortably within the technological look and feel of the film. We tested a variety of different approaches, leading to an interesting selection of experimental machines.

_AI Model Stack
Each product in the Vi platform is driven by a specific, highly specialised model that is trained on enterprise data to fulfil a precise, yet widely impactful function.
To visualise these productised AI models, we combined neural network visualisations with retro-inspired hardware, referencing game cartridges and other 1990s–2000s aesthetic cues to add a satisfying contrast between cutting-edge and technological heritage.

_Cosmos of Data
The Data Web is Vi’s massive collection of 190 million de-identified individuals and third party consumer and operational data points. We chose to visualise this vast quantity of data as an evolving cosmos (to be refined and organised by the machines showcased in early sections of this case study). Represented through nebulous masses of thread and raw fibre, the shear quantity of data was communicated through scale and detail.

_Illustrations
We asked Dominic Kesterton to illustrate platform features in a simplified visual language to assist with our broader goal of distilling complex platform functionality into readable infrastructure based on our existing diagrams and written content. Below are some of his early sketches and drafts, created during the research phase.
